The Zero Room

Candidate 4: Dave May

Gatekeeper: Colin Brockley

Costume

Dodo's outfit in The Savages - the blandest costume ever worn by a companion (but then, Dodo was rather bland anyway). Still, this was supposed to be the Swinging Sixties, right?

A tad cruel, as Dodo's Black Polo Mint ensemble is already in the Zero Room. Still, at least this will give Ms Lane a choice of outfits should she herself be doomed in turn. In, though with some guilt feelings.

Monster

Aggedor. This creature was supposed to have held a whole planet's population in a grip of fear for countless generations, yet it had all the menace of Big Ted. Couldnt the Peladonians have set a trap for it? Wimpish nerds!

You mean you didn't have Big Ted nightmares as a kid? No, you could have Peladon for (lack of) story, crap acting, direction, or just Jon Pertwee, Katy Manning & Elizabeth Sladen, but cuddly Aggy must roam free.

Setting

The planet Exxillon. Just a standard chalk quarry for location scenes, then they tried to film further exterior scenes inside a studio and we get those awful polystyrene rocks. Ugh!

OK, similar sentiments to the last entry, but I cannot really defend such a combined lack of imagination and lighting skills. Let it join the rest of Season 11 in oblivion.

Music

The doingy-twangy music they were going to use as the Season 10 theme (that still managed to find its way onto some episodes). Can you imagine if we had had to listen to that every week? Thank goodness Barry Letts finally saw sense and stuck with the original. Shame JN-T wasn't so bright.

Yeah, but we still had to WATCH Season Ten every week... This will of course provide the ideal lift music for the Zero Room elevator, stuck on an endless tape loop of course. Musical terrorism for the masses!

Effect

The end of Frontier in Space 6, when they didn't even put the effect in. However bad things got at other times, at least some sort of attempt was made, but when the budget runs out, how can the production team expect the audience to follow what's going on when they don't even show the monster that's in the script? So here we have Ogrons fleeing from nothing: not even they are that stupid! Roger Delgado deserved better for his finale.

Surely, anything NOT included in such a terrible episode is de facto an improvement? Sorry, but the non-effect stays out. If only they had had the same idea for Pertwee...

Actor

Brian Blessed in Mindwarp . He seemed to be under the impression that he was still acting in The Black Adder. Too loud and too OTT.

Hmm, tricky. I'm tempted to agree, but Blessed is one of the finest OTT actors in Britain, and in such a lifeless season I cannot condemn him for doing it so well.

Cliffhanger

Planet of the Daleks 1, where we are not at all surprised to see one of the pepperpots appear. However, the Doctor apparently is surprised, even though he came to Spiridon in pursuit of them! So, no surprise factor and no imminent danger. Great ingredients for a cliffhanger, wouldn't you say?

We've been here before, with Dalek Invasion of Earth 1 last issue. Obviously this joins it, as do all other such crass instances Plob's Revenge or bust...

Miscellany

The Mind Robber - not so much because I'm not a great fan of it, more because at around 100 minutes it's just about the right length for a four-part story. So why is it five episodes long? Do I detect another BBC rip-off?

Only if it had been released as a double pack! In contemporary terms, even if Season Six episodes were all 20 minutes long, we would still have 44 of them, subject to wiping. Better than 14 at 25 minutes, by anyone's standards...

In summary, then, Dave, four out of eight. You have successfully consigned to oblivion Dodo's clothes (again), the planet Exxillon, the abortive Pertwee theme and POTD 1. You walk home in the company of Aggedor, a non-existant special effect, Brian Blessed and The Mind Robber . Just try not to get Aggy and Brian confused: one is a dangerous hairy monster, the other comes from Peladon...
