Although not strictly a film, this is an excellent UK documentary on Dirk, presented by the late Russell Harty. Again, as far as I know, it was only transmitted once. Dirk is interviewed at his farmhouse in Provence, just after the release of his fourth autobiography volume, 'Backcloth' (he says he doesn't intend to write anymore, but in fact went onto write much more). Dirk is interviewed on a variety of subjects - his films ("I don't do bit parts"), the war ("the single most important thing that ever happened to me"), his writing, his life in France, his sexuality ("read between the lines in my books, if you are intelligent, you will find the answers"). Two parts that stick in my memory are when he breaks down on camera while talking about the liberation of the concentration camps, which is very moving, and when he says he never really liked making films, he just did it to earn money. His farmhouse looks fantastic, although I was surprised at how developed the surrounding area looks (apparently it was literally all fields when Dirk moved there). This film is a revealing portrait of the man behind the books and he talks very openly and realistically and not at all like a theatrical 'luvvie'.
