The power and fortune of the Von Essenbeck family remained intact even when Germany lost the great war and during the depression that followed. Now it's 1934 and the baron has summoned his family to a dinner that also brings a cousin rising in the Nazi party to the great house accompanied by a rising manager at the baron's company.

Favourite Scene
Dirk bangs on the table.
Martin: Gunther! Pay attention! I think Fredrich has something to say. I bet that you are now going to tell us the date of the wedding. I shall try not to miss it.
Dirk: You won't miss it Martin. Neither will any of the others.
Martin: You mean, the ones who remain?
Dirk: I assume total responsibility, not only of the steel works but of this entire family. And therefore I intend to stop this habit of taking liberties.
Officer: Excuse me, Fredrich. You don't mean to include me amongst your subjects. I'm simply a guest.
Dirk: No, no. I wouldn't dare. But if you are a little patient....(shouts) Gunther! I haven't finished yet!
Gunther: Your problems don't concern me.
Dirk: They concern you because you live in this house.
Gunther: I didn't ask to stay and I won't be for very much longer!
Dirk: I order you! Get back into your place. In this least, this can be a moment of truth.
