DIRK is thinking about gettting his own back on the captain by picking on the captain's son. DIRK is sitting down and chiselling the son's initials into the table. DIRK: Mr Kilpatrick. You've been before the commissioning board three times. Each time you've failed. KIL: Yes sir. DIRK: What age are you? 33? 34? KIL: 35 sir. DIRK: 35? Then your chances of becoming an officer are getting slight aren't they? KIL: Yes sir. DIRK: Unless the board had reason to believe that you had special abilities. KIL: Special abilities sir? DIRK: Yes. Ingenuity in a difficult situation, courage, loyalty to a particular officer with influence who might go out of his way to er....use it. KIL: Yes sir. I think I see sir. DIRK: Now you're responsible aren't you, for the discipline of the younger midshipmen when they kick over the traces. KIL: Make them kiss the gunners daughter, yes sir. DIRK: Yes, without fear or favour? KIL: Sir. DIRK: How about young Mr Crawford? How does he take it? Like a man I hope. KIL: Well actually sir, I've not yet had occasion to... DIRK: Not yet had occasion? But if he's made of good stuff then he must be high spririted. And if he's high spirited, he must get into mischief. And if he gets into mischief, he must be punished. The captain insisted on no favouritism. I think you heard him say that. KIL: Yes sir. DIRK: Be watchful Mr Kilpatrick. And diligent. KIL: Yes sir.
