Dirk got very drunk the night before and in this state told Lucy Mannett that he was in love with her. He returns the next day. DIRK: Miss Mannett, I'm here for a moment only. Because I'm not a man who takes much time over apologies. I find myself owing so many that it's easier to dispense with the whole business. LUCY: Then pray, dispense with it. DIRK: I would, but for one thing. I know from my hazy recollection that my behaviour last night was unpardonable. That doesn't greatly concern me, it often is. But you made me a certain promise, which I recall as clearly as if I'd never taken a glass of wine. LUCY: It shall be respected. DIRK: Thank you. That was my chief concern in coming here. Lest you might simply have been humouring a drunken fool. LUCY: Is it not often said that the truth emerges at such times? DIRK: And truely said. Miss Mannett, in all my drunken babbling, there was not one false word. Thats what I wanted you to know. You may rest assured that I shall never refer to this again. Charles bursts in. LUCY: Charles! DIRK: Come in Darnay, I was about to take my leave. DIRK: Good bye Miss Mannett. LUCY: Goodbye Mr Carton. Dirk leaves and walks past Lucy's nurse. DIRK: You're not your usual loving self today Miss Pross? DIRK: No invitations for coffee? Oh wait! PROSS: What is it now? DIRK: Something I should have remembered to tell Mr Darnay. Dirk walks back into the room to see Lucy and Charles kissing. DIRK: My profoundest apologies. CHARLES: Mr Carton, you shall be the first to hear our news. LUCY: No, Charles. CHARLES: We are to be married. DIRK: I congratulate you most sincerely. I'm sure that nobody could make you happier. For my part, I have a piece of news which will be your first wedding present. I came back simply to tell you that you have nothing to fear from our friend, Barsad. He is no longer with us. CHARLES: No longer with us? DIRK: He's dead, he took a fall step into the river. I passed his funeral on my way here. Dirk smirks and leaves. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
